Magic Hospital

A speculation on alternative scenarios for healthcare

The problem with hospitals today

Despite significant advances in science and technology that have improved life expectancy and healthcare efficiency, and despite the daily dedication of healthcare professionals, the hospital system still often feels like it has failed us. Hospitals remain places we fear: sterile, and emotionally distant, they resemble factories, reducing people to bodies to be processed. Their designs have remained largely unchanged for decades, repeating the same spatial layouts, and routines.

The human cost of efficiency

While clinical hygiene and operational performance are important, the focus on efficiency has come at the expense of emotional and psychological wellbeing. The cold aesthetics, artificial lighting, and rigid professionalism of healthcare spaces make both patients and staff feel alienated. The spiritual and social dimensions of care – rituals, human connection, and emotional support – are treated as secondary. This disconnection negatively impacts patients healing and contributes to burnout among caregivers.

Imagining new possibilities

Magic Hospital is a research project created to explore these issues from a different perspective. Using Speculative Design and generative AI, we explore alternative visions of what hospitals could be. These scenarios are meant not as a forecast or a design proposal, but to challenge assumptions and the status quo, broadening our perspective on a very rigid spatial typology.

Reclaiming human values in healthcare

We believe the hospital of the future must integrate new values with the current efficiency. By envisioning institutions that embrace wellness, illness, healing, and death, not as processes, but as the most important rituals of life, we can build healthcare spaces that foster empathy, and balance.
Magic Hospital invites us to see this not just as innovation, but as a cultural shift in how we care for ourselves and each other.

What if

From process to ritual

The hospital is a journey through the human experience, and life’s most profound rituals, from birth to death. What if, instead of prioritizing efficiency and monetization, we reimagined the hospital’s narrative around these human experiences?

From the moment one crosses the entrance, a sensory shift marks the beginning of a transformation. Spaces like the pharmacy, often hidden and clinical, could become transparent stages of alchemies. Encounters with doctors bring the first deep human connection, charged with vulnerability and trust. As one moves deeper, interactions with machines – scans, surgeries – replace human touch, challenging how we design for empathy in technological care. Convalescence and downtime invite stillness and introspection. Ultimately, the hospital frames life’s two most profound events – death and birth – each with its own atmosphere, pace, and power.

Rather than merely spaces of efficiency, hospitals can become places that honor the full spectrum of life.
