WHAT IS A CAMPFIRE ūüĒ•?¬†

CAMPFIRE is a social event where a small group of participants share stories.
In a cozy dim lit circle with a lot of cushions and tree trunks as stools, tea and candles, (powered by Nachtlab Agency), a small selected gathering finds the right intimacy to speak up. It’s a safe space that fosters interaction and opens up to debate.

During the FRAME-by-day events, D/DOCK staged four CAMPFIRE sessions:

CAMPFIRE 1: ‚ÄúIt‚Äôs¬†all¬†about¬†the¬†money,¬†the¬†rest is¬†conversation‚ÄĚ
Why do we try to pretend that design isn’t first and foremost a commercial business like every other?

CAMPFIRE 2. “Commercial designers
cannot¬†be¬†true¬†artists‚ÄĚ
Is a drive towards individual expression and auteurship compatible with trulyserving client needs?

CAMPFIRE 3. ‚ÄúAwards¬†can¬†be¬†bought¬†with¬†money or¬†influence‚ÄĚ
Is it even possible to create an award that recognizes the best design work, rather than the best connected designers?

CAMPFIRE 4. ‚ÄúA¬†continuous¬†drive¬†to¬†innovate¬†is¬†unhealthy‚ÄĚ
Is our industry’s emphasis on innovation simply a waste of time, energy and materials?

The third CAMPFIRE was maybe the boldest one; challenging the status quo of awards events, considering it actually took place during FRAME AWARDS. Yet no one feared putting his or her head in the lion’s mouth.

‚ÄúIt‚Äôs nice to enter an award competition to get appreciation, it‚Äôs even human, but if we make ourselves dependent on appreciation, it goes wrong‚ÄĚ

After an animated debate, the focus went on the selection criteria, pointing out how it would be essential to have sustainable values in it. A provocative feedback which has been promptly picked from FRAME to be placed in their bucket list for the next awards.
Legitimate provocative questions left the CAMPFIRE-attendants and FRAME team with food for thought.

During the fourth CAMPFIRE, the culture of Innovation as the idea of constant struggle for supremacy in the scientific and technological competition ignited a lively discussion. Everyone agreed that the world would be a more innovative place if we could bring human values such as empathy, sustainability, care. So more targeted and conscious innovation.
