The Stadskamer is the vibrant heart of Utrecht’s Hoog Catharijne shopping mall. Utrecht’s history is deeply intertwined with water, once serving as trade routes through its canals. In the Stadskamer, history comes alive as boats sail beneath the water islands, connected to the exterior canal. Alongside STIR Architecture’s designs, we crafted the full interior and enhanced the dynamics of the water islands.

The shopping promenade features inviting benches with rounded edges, while folding canopies along the inner wall double as decorative elements, illuminated with LED strips when closed. The square is lined with restaurants and cafés, accessible even after store hours. With a 15-meter-high transparent interior, a glass roof, expansive windows, and three water islands, the space blends indoors and outdoors, connecting the two parts of the mall.
