Located near Amsterdam Central, Huys Azië sits along the IJ river within a distinctive office building composed of two interconnected volumes. At the heart of the building lies the recently transformed 350-square-metre entrance area. This multifunctional space redefines the role of a lobby, connecting the street level to the seven office floors above. The unexpected integration of a mezzanine maximises vertical space while creating a sense of intimacy rarely found in similar settings.

Sustainability was a key consideration from the outset. Materials were selected not only for their aesthetic appeal, but also for their environmental performance, including recycled wood flooring, helping reduce the project’s ecological footprint.

In a location defined by movement, Huys Azië invites stillness, anchoring the building with a thoughtful space to pause, meet, and connect.

Rooted in traditional Japanese principles such as minimalism and material honesty, the design evokes a timeless, quietly elegant character, reminiscent of a traditional tea house.

In contrast to the previous lobby, the new design conceived the space as a welcoming threshold. The venue now functions as a bar and restaurant for both tenants and visitors, while also serving as an event space for gatherings, talks, and private receptions. Modular furnishings on the mezzanine allow for adaptive layouts, supporting a wide range of uses.
