The Gent, a multi-tenant office building located in the heart of Amsterdam, is a 6,000-square-metre monument designed by Dutch architect Van Gendt. The renovation, led by Spanish architect Cruz y Ortiz, combines historic charm and modern comfort, with natural light flooding the space.

We were commissioned to design the souterrain, the hidden gem of the building. In the backyard, a pond with a glass bottom allows light to penetrate the underground level, transforming this once neglected space into a 1,200-square-metre multifunctional area. This provides office tenants the opportunity to partake in activities they’ve always desired but often lacked the space for on their own office floors, such as private dining, a spacious indoor cinema, or even a jam session with the company rock band.
